Playa Norte isn’t just loved by those who visit; it’s also recognized globally for its exceptional beauty. It has consistently been ranked among the top beaches in Mexico and the Caribbean. Nothing compares to the turquoise blue water and gentle waves that contrast perfectly with the white sand of Playa Norte. What to do on Playa Norte

This beach is a haven for those who love to bask in the sun, sip tropical drinks in the shade of the palm trees or take leisurely strolls along the shore. From the tip of Playa Norte, you can walk all the way to the ferry dock and back, taking in the views of the luxury yachts and catamarans as well as the small fishing pangas as they come in with their catch of the day. The shallow waters extend quite a distance from the shore, creating a natural pool and allowing beachgoers to walk out and enjoy the warm Caribbean Sea.

Some of the best snorkeling on Isla Mujeres can be found right here at Norte Beach in and around the rocky outcroppings that surround the Mia Reef Hotel. Playa Norte is especially enchanting in the late afternoon sunset and is a lovely place to watch Isla Mujeres’ famous sunset. Its beauty creates a perfect backdrop for romantic moments and family memories alike.

Playa Norte is home to a vibrant selection of beach clubs, bars, and restaurants, offering everything from haute cuisine and signature cocktails to simple local fare served up with buckets of cold beer. The beach club options run from Green Dragon, Guru, Cañabar and Oceanvs to old-school favorites like Tarzan and Las Hamacas. Read more about the best beach clubs on Isla Mujeres here.

The beach’s proximity to downtown Isla also means easy access to a wide variety of dining and entertainment options including DJs, live music and karaoke all just a short walk away.

Hotels Playa Norte Isla Mujeres

Some of the most popular hotels on Isla Mujeres are located on Playa Norte. Mia Reef Resort, Lotus Beach Hotel, Na Balam, Maria del Mar, Villa Kin and Casa del Jaguar are all situated on the shores of North Beach offering privileged access for guests to what is undoubtedly the best beach on Isla Mujeres.

Playa el Cocal

While capitalizing on the worldwide popularity of Playa Norte, some of the largest and most popular hotels in the north end of Isla Mujeres are actually located just next door on Playa el Cocal. Playa el Cocal is the stretch of pristine sugar-white sand that lies at the north end of the island.

Playa el Cocal begins roughly at the end of Hidalgo (the main pedestrian-only street in downtown) and wraps around to the east, ending at approximately Adolfo Lopez Mateos. If you are walking the beach from the ferry dock and heading north, once you have passed Coco Beach Bar, you have found Playa el Cocal.

This is a lovely stretch of wide sandy beach that curves around to the east until it meets Playa Norte. The border between the two beaches is completely indistinguishable and while one gets worldwide acclaim the other is just as beautiful.

Playa el Cocal is one of the very best places to watch the luxury yachts and catamarans tie up off-shore with their passengers ready to party in the warm shallow water. If you are looking for a beach club experience, you have some nice options to choose from. Playa el Cocal is also one of best spots to catch the sunset, a must-do if you are visiting the island.

There are some excellent options for lodging on Playa el Cocal. The condos at Nautibeach, Privileges Aluxes and Ixchel Beach Hotel are all situated on Playa el Cocal. Our favorite beach club, Zama is located on Playa el Cocal. Zama offers a laid-back but elegant atmosphere, world-class cuisine and signature cocktails which you can enjoy in this beachfront swimming pool or on the beach.

If you are looking for a more casual, old-school beach club experience, Palapa Leidy is just a few minutes around the point. Here you can also find one of the island’s most popular beachfront restaurants, Mayan Beach Club. This is also the perfect place to watch the sunset over the horizon at the end of a beautiful day on the island.

Playa Centro

Playa Centro is the vibrant heart of Isla Mujeres and is the beach closest to the main ferry dock. This beach is always bustling with activity, making it the perfect spot for those who love to be in the center of the action.

Playa Centro is ideal for visitors who enjoy socializing and experiencing the lively side of beach life. The area is always buzzing with energy, from beachgoers soaking up the sun to vendors selling local crafts and snacks. It’s a great place to meet new people, enjoy water sports, or simply relax and watch the world go by.

The south end of the beach, closer to the ferry dock is rather narrow and dotted with wooden piers. From here you can watch the boats come and go bringing out groups for snorkeling, scuba diving and fishing trips. As you walk further north, the beach widens and you can find some lovely areas to set up for the day under the shade of the palm trees.

Visitors to Playa Centro can savor all kinds of delicious Mexican cuisine enjoy a refreshing drink at one of the many beachside bars. Playa Centro has quite a few beachside restaurants to choose from including Muelle 7, La Playita, Lancheros, Picus and Cocos Snack Bar. Most of these places also offer loungers and umbrellas on the beach.

The beach is also within a short walk of a plethora of shops and street vendors, offering a wide range of island crafts. There are dozens of shops all along Av. Rueda Medina and Hidalgo, the main pedestrian walking street is just a few minutes away, walking.

There are no hotels or condominium complexes located right on Playa Centro but just across Avenida Rueda Medina you will find several great and affordable lodging options like Posada del Mar and Hotel Vistalmar.

The proximity to the ferry dock makes Playa Centro an easily accessible spot for day-trippers or those staying on the mainland in Cancun so expect the beach to be busy, even in the summer low season.

Playa Tiburon

Playa Tiburon, which translates to “Shark Beach,” is a unique and tranquil beach located in the Sac Bajo area of Isla Mujeres. Despite its name, the beach is known for being exceptionally safe and family-friendly. It’s a smaller and more intimate beach compared to some of the island’s larger and more popular spots, offering a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.

Playa tiburon on isla mujeres

One of the most distinctive features of Playa Tiburon is its shallow, clear waters, making it an excellent spot for swimming, especially for families with children. The beach is also famous for its opportunity to interact with nurse sharks, which are known for being docile and are kept in an enclosed area of the beach. Visitors can observe or even swim with these fascinating creatures under supervision, making for an unforgettable experience.

The beach has a rustic charm, with a few family-run restaurants and bars dotted along the shoreline. These establishments typically offer fresh seafood dishes, including the local specialty, Tikin-Xic fish, which is marinated and grilled, often right on the beach.

In addition to swimming and shark encounters, Playa Tiburon offers opportunities for snorkeling and exploring the nearby coral reefs. The beach is also close to other attractions on the island, such as the Tortugranja (Turtle Farm) and the remnants of a Mayan temple.

Playa Tiburon provides a more laid-back, authentic experience of Isla Mujeres. It’s a place where visitors can easily interact with local families and enjoy the island’s culture in a relaxed setting. The beach often has a lively atmosphere, with local music and impromptu gatherings, especially during weekends and holidays.

Playa Lancheros

Playa Lancheros, a charming and somewhat less frequented beach on Isla Mujeres, offers a laid-back retreat for families and those seeking a more authentic local experience. This beach is characterized by its calm waters, making it a safe and enjoyable spot for swimmers of all ages. Because this is a popular spot for day-tripping catamarans to bring their passengers, the sandy stretch, can get quite crowded at certain times of the day.

This is a place to come if you are looking for the old-school Isla Mujeres beach club experience. You will generally find it filled with Mexican tourists and locals from Cancun who come over to the island for the day with their families. The gentle waves and shallow waters near the shore are ideal for children, offering a safe space for them to play and swim. There is a long wooden pier that adds a touch of rustic charm to the beach, and it’s common to see local fishermen going about their daily routines, providing a glimpse into real island life.

The restaurant at Playa Lancheros is well-known for its fresh fish and seafood. This local eatery offers a taste of the island’s culinary delights, serving up fresh ceviche and traditional dishes such as “Tikin-Xic,” a regional specialty of fish marinated in achiote and sour orange, wrapped in banana leaves, and cooked over an open grill.

Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as the Tortugranja (Turtle Farm), which is a short golf cart ride from Playa Lancheros. This conservation center offers a chance to learn about and interact with sea turtles, making it an educational and enjoyable experience for families and wildlife enthusiasts.

Playa Lancheros is located in the Sac Bajo area, about 3 miles from downtown Isla. You can get to Playa Lancheros by taxi or by renting a bike or golf cart.  Playa Lancheros has an unassuming vibe and is usually much quieter during the week than on the weekends. If the fancy upmarket beach clubs are not what you are looking for, check out Playa Lancheros for a taste of “Old Isla”.

Playa Indios

Playa Indios, a hidden gem on Isla Mujeres, offers a more secluded and rustic beach experience. This tranquil spot is perfect for those looking to escape the more tourist-centric areas of the island.

Playa indios on isla mujeres, ready for guests.

The beach is less developed, providing a more authentic and natural island atmosphere. The unspoiled landscape, with its lush vegetation and pristine sands, sets the scene for a peaceful retreat. From here, you can relax on the beach as you gaze out over the turquoise-blue waters of Isla Mujeres Bay across to the hotel zone in Cancun.

Playa Indios is particularly appealing to couples and individuals seeking solitude and tranquility. Its picturesque views of the Caribbean Sea, combined with the serene environment, make it an ideal location for quiet contemplation, romantic walks, or simply unwinding with a good book under the shade of a palm tree. The beach’s natural beauty also makes it a fantastic spot for photography enthusiasts.

Unlike the more commercialized beaches on the island, Playa Indios is surrounded by nature, offering a more authentic experience. The area around the beach has fewer commercial establishments, allowing visitors to enjoy a more undisturbed environment. This focus on nature and simplicity does not mean a lack of comfort, as there are still basic amenities available to ensure a pleasant visit.

Playa Paraiso

Playa Paraiso, true to its name, is a paradise for adventurers and nature lovers. This beach presents a less developed and more rugged landscape compared to the more popular beaches on Isla Mujeres. Its natural, unspoiled beauty is a significant draw for those seeking a more authentic and adventurous beach experience.

One of isla mujeres best beaches desserted and with a beautiful flat ocean.

The beach is an ideal spot for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The clear waters and abundant marine life make Playa Paraiso a fantastic location for exploring underwater wonders. The coral formations and variety of fish in these waters provide an exhilarating experience for both novice and experienced snorkelers and divers.

Around Playa Paraiso, visitors can find several snorkeling and scuba diving schools offering tours and equipment rentals. These guided tours are great for those looking to safely explore the underwater landscapes, with experienced instructors leading the way. Additionally, the beach’s location makes it a starting point for various water activities and excursions, including deep-sea fishing and sailing trips.

Playa Garrafon

Playa Garrafon, distinct from the overly commercialized and over-priced Garrafon Park, is a hidden jewel on the sheltered coast of Bahia de Mujeres. Located on the south end of the island, close to Punta Sur, Playa Garrafon is a calm beach that is ideal for families and people who love to explore the underwater world.

Playa garrafon on isla mujeres, one of our favorite snorkeling spots.

The main attraction of Playa Garrafon is its exquisite coral reef, which is part of the marine National Park and protected by the Mexican government. Because access is restricted, this part of the reef is very healthy and home to a diverse range of marine species. Snorkelers here can enjoy a serene environment, exploring the colorful underwater world at their own pace. The crystal clear waters and abundant sea life, including tropical fish and various coral species, make every visit an unforgettable experience.

Access to the beach area is through a wonderful beach club called Garrafon de Castillo which has been in operation for decades. This beach club offers a more secluded and intimate beach experience and is celebrated for its stunning reef and vibrant aquatic life.

To enter Garrafon de Castillo, you will pay a small entry fee which gets you access to not only the beach but also use of the sheltered loungers, lockers, showers and restrooms and service with a smile from the bar and restaurant. The food is nothing fancy but the beers are ice-cold and well-priced. There is snorkel gear available for rent at very reasonable prices. Kids will love the resident iguanas that roam the grounds looking for handouts from guests!

Playa de la Guadalupana

Playa de la Guadalupana is an undeveloped stretch of coastline on the eastern side of the island. This beach is rarely visited by anyone other than local islanders who come with their families on weekends and holidays to enjoy a bit of beach time away from the throngs of tourists and people coming over on a day trip from Cancun.

Playa la guadalupana, isla mujeres

Playa del la Guadalupana is one of the few open stretches of beach on the Caribbean side of the island. This side, which faces out to the open ocean is not protected like the bay side and the waves can make it too rough to swim. However, there are some days when the water is calm and you can wander in a bit and even do a bit of snorkeling if the water is calm. Most of the water entry is a bit rocky so water shoes or sandals are recommended.

This is a beach to just hang out and relax. There are no beach clubs or vendors, just you the sand and the sea. The nice thing about this side of the island is that you can very often find pretty shells and bits of nicely worn sea glass to collect and bring home. There are no hotels or beach clubs in this area so be prepared to bring along everything you need. You can enjoy a lovely quiet beach day with just a few beach chairs, an umbrella and some cold drinks in a cooler.

Playa Mascotas, the only pet-friendly beach on the island is also located just nearby so if you are traveling with a four-legged companion, this is the perfect place to come. Just be sure to keep your pet on a leash and clean up any messes to keep the beach clean and welcoming for everyone. To get to Playa de la Guadalupana from downtown Isla, you will need to take a taxi or rent a golf cart.

Playa Media Luna

Located on the northern end of Isla Mujeres, just around the bend from Playa Norte, is Playa Media Luna. Media Luna means “half moon” in Spanish and the bay is so named for its distinctive half-moon shape. To get to Playa Media Luna from downtown Isla, go east on C. Abasolo until it ends on the east side of the island. Follow the walking path to the beach area.

Playa media luna, on isla mujeres

Playa Media Luna is fairly quiet with fewer people than the other beaches on the north end of the island. Its location on the “rough” Caribbean side of the island means that there can be some wave action and the water entry is rocky in places. With the proper footwear, you can wander into the water and explore the rocky areas and tidal pools. This is a good place to come if you like hunting for small shells and sea glass. There are no lifeguards on duty so swim at your own risk.

Probably the biggest draw to Playa Media Luna is the sunrise. This is a wonderful place to come in the wee hours of the morning to watch the sun come up over the horizon. If you are looking for a place to start your day with a bit of meditation, yoga or tai chi, this is the place. From here, you can also access the malecon which is a lovely place for a relaxing stroll offering fantastic views down the Caribbean coastline.

There are a few nice places to stay on or close to Playa Media Luna. Hotel Secreto, Selina and Hotel Playa la Media Luna all offer great access to this relatively unknown beach. The beach’s proximity to downtown Isla Mujeres means that all the great restaurants, bars, clubs and shops are within easy walking distance.
