Cozumel Resorts – What to Know Before You Go
Cozumel is a little bit stuck in time. In the 1970s, 80s and 90s the island was a mecca for divers who came to the Mexican Caribbean to explore the wonders of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. At the time, Cozumel was considered one of the top dive destinations in the world. Today, the island remains a popular destination for divers but its tourism has been far eclipsed by Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya, a region that has experienced unprecedented growth over the past two decades.
Most of the resorts in Cozumel, even the nicer ones, were built quite a few years ago and it shows. Unlike Playa del Carmen which just keeps putting up more and more modern resorts, and condominiums, Cozumel seems to have stalled. For example, El Cozumeleño Resort was built in 1974 and last renovated in 2006 (post Hurricane Wilma). So, because I don’t want anyone to be surprised and because pictures can be misleading, the description of each resort begins with the year the resort was built and when it was last renovated.

This is the only report on our list that is not oceanfront. Rather than offering your typical “beach vacation”, this resort’s unique concept focuses on connecting guests with nature through daily guided activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, and jungle treks.
Located just off the main road that circles the island, The Explorean is perfectly positioned for guests looking to immerse themselves in Cozumel’s natural beauty while still enjoying easy access to local attractions like the Mayan ruins and the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park. The resort’s all-inclusive package includes not just meals and beverages but also an array of exciting excursions, making it a perfect choice for families and couples alike seeking an active vacation.
We were able to visit this property when we stayed at the sister resort Fiesta Americana. We were very impressed with the level of the accommodations and the amazing excursions they offer their guests.

Last renovated 2014. Fiesta Americana Cozumel is a small all-inclusive resort nestled in a great location that offers both seclusion and accessibility to the island’s attractions. This resort is popular with families, couples, and solo travelers seeking an immersive tropical getaway. The property boasts a fresh contemporary design that harmonizes with the surrounding flora and fauna, offering guests a serene environment to unwind and rejuvenate.
Amenities at Fiesta Americana Cozumel include an outdoor swimming pool with a swim-up bar, Na’ha Spa offering a range of treatments, and a kids’ club with amenities tailored to younger guests like arcade games and a pool table. The resort also features an activities concierge to make it easy to book scuba diving, snorkeling and other excursions that showcase the vibrant marine life of the Caribbean Sea. At night, hotel guests can enjoy entertainment such as Mayan dance shows and karaoke.
We stayed at the Fiesta Americana in the fall of 2023. At that time (and at the time of publishing) all of the beachfront facilities had been closed by the government. The sun beds are all unusable. The loungers were stacked inside the beachside restaurant which was closed. The pool had been drained. Access to the water is permitted and there is a lifeguard on duty to keep an eye on the snorkels but if you are looking for a Cozumel resort with great beachfront amenities, this is not the best hotel for you.
